The Basics of Grooming Your Mare

Horses have been one of men's best companions since time immemorial. They are not only useful in terms of transportation, sports, and recreational activities, but they can also be loving and stress-relieving pets. That's why, it comes as no surprise that more and more people have gotten interested in taking care of these gentle creatures.

Just like any other domestic animal, having one as your companion entails a lot responsibilities. One of the most important tasks that you need to do in order to keep your pet in a good condition is his grooming. Some people may think that this is just for the sake of a presentable appearance but actually, it is more than that.

Maintaining a good hygiene for your horse can help him avoid more complicated health complications brought about by parasites and even fleas. So, to help you keep your beloved creature healthy and clean, here are some basic things that you need to do in terms of grooming:

    • First off, tie your mare securely to make sure that he can not run away when you are starting to clean him up. And also, choose a place where there is a sufficient amount of water.

    • Next, pick out a brush, preferably the one with soft bristles, and start combing his face. Untangle any knotted mane. Then proceed to his forelock. Remember to do it with ease and be very careful when brushing near his eyes.

    • After that, make sure to do a thorough inspection in his eyes and ears. Clean them if you have to but remember to do it slowly and lightly so as not to hurt or startle him. If there are any abnormalities in those parts, make sure to consult your vet immediately.

    • Then, take out your medium-bristled brush and start combing his body from neck to back. Also, take this time to feel his body for any lumps or swelling. Also check for any forms of skin disease or wounds.

    • Slowly move your strokes toward his stomach and legs. For the tail, you can use a hard-bristled comb to groom it.

    • When you get to the legs, carefully and meticulously examine them for any form of injuries, whether they be in the form of cuts and bruises or any inflammation that can be symptoms of a more serious case.

    • You can also give him a full bath complete with shampoo and conditioning to maintain a shiny and tangle-free mane.

    • Then with the use of a pick, clean out each hoof and again, you need to check them out for any abnormalities.

This is a good way to help your gentle buddy relax. Indeed, pampering him has been proven to be very therapeutic and can relieve stress which can improve their performance.

There is still, of course, another way to enhance the riding ability of your horse. You can try out hypnotherapy and hypnosis as these will not only help your mare but yourself as well.
